Soft Glow Effect
In this post, you will learn how to use soft glow with smart filters. You will use overlay or soft light blend mode to do it. Really easy and effective! Since you will be using smart objects and smart filters, you can edit the effect whenever you want. Taking advantage of this makes it easier to revert mistakes and play with other adjustments. Thus, I think it is best way to apply effects like soft glow effect in Photoshop.
Step 1: Duplicate The Background Layer and Convert It To Smart Object
Duplicate the background layer using Ctrl+J (Win) / Command+J (Mac). Then, either right click on the new layer and choose Convert to Smart Object or select the layer and click on the icon at top left of the layer panel, then choose Convert to Smart Object.
Step 2: Apply Gaussian Blur Smart Filter And Change The Blend Mode Of That
Smart object being selected, go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur from options bar top of the screen.
In this example I will make the Radius value 8 pixels. It depends on the resolution of the image. Usually values between 3-10 gives nice result for soft glow.
After applying the blur, double click on the icon that appears next to Gaussian Blur text in the layer panel.
In the blending options panel that will appear, pick overlay for strong glowing or soft light for softer glowing effect. I like Overlay better, if it is too strong you can just lower the opacity.
(You can play around the blend mode of the smart object)
