How To Make Digital Nose Job in Photoshop

Digital Nose Job

In this post, you will learn how to fix nose problems with Photoshop. It can be called digital nose job. You will use Liquify filter, Free Transform and the Healing Brush. You can make the nose smaller, bigger or fix a crooked nose. Sometimes its not the nose’s fault! Even wrong lighting could cause a nose to look bad.

We will use the image edited in Smooth Skin post.

Step 1: Duplicate The Original Image, Draw A Symmetry Line On The Nose And Make It Straight

Duplicate the background layer twice using Ctrl+J (Win) / Command+J (Mac).  Go on the new layers and name them layer1 and layer2 . Select layer1, select the Brush Tool from tools bar and draw a line that goes through middle of the nose.

Open the Liquify filter from Filter options at the options bar at the top of the screen.

This will bring out the image to a new liquify window with some options. You just need to change the Brush Tool size so that its big enough for the nose. In this case its ~300 pixels.

Click and drag the nose from its edges to make the black line straight. Also make sure that the nose symmetric. If you make a mistake use Ctrl+Z (Win) / Command+Z (Mac) or click Restore All button. You may need to get used to behavior of the tool, so do not be discouraged. Change the brush size if needed.

After you fixed the nose with the help of the line, go to layer2 and hit Ctrl+F (Win) / Command+F (Mac). The liquify changes will effect layer2 which do not have the black line. After that you can delete layer1 or turn off its visibility.

Step 2: Select The Nose With Lasso Tool, Refine Edges And Make It Smaller

Select lasso tool from tools bar. Select around the nose.

Click Refine Edge from Lasso Tool options and change the Radius and Feather values. Change output to New Layer. Radius and Feather values should be decided based on resolution. They decide how well the refined image will blend with the underlying image.

After you hit ok new layer with just the nose will appear on the layers panel. Double click on the name and name it “nose”.  On that layer, open Free Transform from Edit option at the options bar at the top. You can hit Ctrl+T (Win) / Command+T (Mac) for shortcut.

This will allow us to change size, place and direction of the image. Drag the side dots to each other to make the nose thinner, change the length with the bottom or top handles if you want then hit Enter (Win) / Return (Mac) when you are done.

Relocate the nose on the face.

Step 3: Clean Up With The Healing Brush

Since you changed the size of the nose, the underlying layer will show some old parts. You need to clean them so that the nose looks natural. Select the Healing Brush from Tools bar from left. Find a good skin around nose then hit Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) + left click to sample it. Then click and drag around the nose to clean up incorrect parts. You can learn more about the Healing Brush in Remove Wrinkles post.
