How to Change Eye Color With Photoshop – Learn Photo Editing

In this post, you will see how to change eye color in Photoshop using an adjustment layer. Thanks to Hue/Saturation layer you will not the hurt original image. Using lasso tool and Hue/Saturation adjustment layer it is easy to change eye color in an image. After that, using color blend mode and brushing excess parts of the layer will give the eyes that real look.

Step 1: Zoom In On The Eyes and Select Them With Lasso Tool

You can zoom in on the eyes in the photo with (Ctrl+space bar (Win) / Command+space bar (Mac)+Left click) and zoom out with (Alt+space bar (Win) / Option+space bar (Mac)+Left click). After zooming in use space bar+Left click(drag) to move image.

Then select the Lasso Tool from the Tools panel on the left of the screen, or press the letter L . With the Lasso Tool draw a selection around one of the irises  (colored part of the eye). To select the second iris you need to hold Shift Key, otherwise first selection will disappear. Using Shift Lasso Tool you will be able to select both irises. Do not worry about being precise.

Step 2: Add A Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer, Change Colors and Use Color Blend Mode

After selecting eyes, click on to New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom right of the screen. Choose Hue/Saturation adjustment layer in the options panel.

Now that the layer is added Properties panel of the layer will pop up. Fill the colorize checkbox. Then use the hue slide bar to decide the color you want and keep the saturation low for natural look of the color. A value lower than 15 will usually be nice for saturation. Keep the lightness at zero.

In the layer panel there will be a nested option bar above the layers. Click on it then select “Color”. This will make a minor difference on brightness since color blend mode only changes the colors.

Step 3: Fit the Layer and Eyes Better Using Brush

Your selection with Lasso Tool probably will not be perfect. Thus, it needs to be fixed using brush tool. Select the layer mask that you created and select the brush tool at the Tool Panel. From the brush panel at the top of screen, change the brush size to deal with edges of the irises (usually 10-20) and make hardness 0.

The white parts of the layer mask will make the color difference and black parts will not be effected.  Thus, you want to paint the iris with white and use black over other parts of the eyes and eyelids if needed. Make the foreground color white while painting inside iris and use black outside of it. Use shortcut X to swap foreground and background color easily.
